Vitebsk State University opens ESICs in biotechnology and physics

VITEBSK, 2 February (BelTA) – In 2011 the Piotr Masherov Vitebsk State University plans to create educational, scientific and industrial complexes (ESIC) Biotechnology, Engineering Physics and Fish Breeding, BelTA learned from the science and research department of the university. In 2010 the Vitebsk State University signed scientific and technical cooperation agreements with a number of enterprises of Vitebsk Oblast. These agreements envisage the creation of educational, scientific and industrial complexes which improve the quality of educational process and scientific research. The Vitebsk State University and a veterinary medicines’ manufacturer Rubikon Company will join efforts to create the ESIC “Biotechnology”. There are also plans to engage BelVitunifarm and Vitebsk Biofactory. This format of interaction between the university and manufacturers of biotechnological products will allow, on the one hand, organizing the educational process taking into account recent developments in this area. On the other, it will provide an opportunity to develop new biotechnology products for import substitution program, including using local natural complexes of biologically active substances. As part of the preparatory work to establish the complexes, the university, on request of enterprises, carried out research within the framework of the Ph.D. and Masters’ theses and graduate works. It has already prepared three applications for patents. The university has organized on-the-job training for students at these enterprises. The ESIC “Engineering Physics” will be established in cooperation with the “Display” Design Bureau which specializes in the design and manufacture of video monitors and computers for harsh environments. The ESIC “Fishery” suggests monitoring the status of fish fauna and food resources in Lake Streshnev, Senno District. The results of the monitoring will be used to work out ways to restore and use resources of closed forest ponds. Together with scientists from the Vitebsk Academy of Veterinary Medicine the university will carry out ichthyo -pathologic studies of fish in this lake, organize training and field practice of students. All in all, the Vitebsk State University operates eight ESICs that are based on historical, mathematical, biology, legal, artistic, graphic and philology departments.
