Belarus announces tender for development of slate coal deposits

MINSK, 21 March (BelTA) - Belarus has announced open international tenders to find investors for development of slate coal deposits in Turov and Lyuban, BelTA learnt from Yelena Penyaz, chief of the information and public relations department – spokesperson for the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. “The project is supported by the state and aims to tap to the maximum into the domestic fuel and energy potential. Slate coal products will be used to produce motor fuel, synthesis gas and industrial feedstock,” the official said. The project will be implemented on a tight schedule. The winners of the tender will be announced on 7 October. The relevant agreement is to be signed by the end of the year. Turov deposit lies in the south-west of Zhitkovichi District, Gomel Oblast, and in the north-east of Stolin District, Brest Oblast. The prospected reserves of slate coal are estimated at 696 million tonnes. Lyuban deposit is located in Lyuban District, Minsk Oblast, and Glusk District, Mogilev Oblast. The expected reserves reach 1.2 billion tonnes. Required investment and expenditure will be defined during the feasibility study of the project. The official stated that in March Belarus announced open international tenders to find investors for development of iron ore, building stone and brown coal deposits. The relative projects have been designed by the ministries of natural resources and environment, industry, architecture and construction, other departments under the auspices of the National Investment and Privatization Agency.
