Social activity of Belarusian Orthodox Church on the rise

MINSK, 14 April (BelTA) – The social activity of the Belarusian Orthodox Church is on the rise, said President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko as he met with members of the Synod of the Belarusian Orthodox Church on 14 April. “I totally agree with the patriarch: in order to stay powerful and influential, the church should be open to the world, should work hard with people, primarily the youth. It should realize social, educational and cultural initiatives, getting not only parishioners but a large number of people involved,” said the head of state. According to the President, the charity home, projects to help the disabled in monasteries, to help former convicts in the Orthodox rehabilitation center in the village of Lyubcha, Borisov District and similar endeavors are a good example of the revived traditions of the church’s social service. The practice is worth continuing, said Alexander Lukashenko. The Belarusian head of state believes that the preservation of the historical and cultural legacy and the restoration of ancient temples are important activities that require active participation of the church. “You should stop hoping only for resources of the state. You should attract donations and sponsor aid,” said the head of state.
